Job Title Police Officer
Description College Officers work in partnership with the Emerson community they serve to maintain order, protect students, faculty, staff and their property, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the overall quality of life for the entire college community. To accomplish this mission, the Officer will patrol the campus to prevent violations of the general laws of the Commonwealth and college policies. Officers investigate violations of college policies and state laws and take appropriate action based on the circumstances surrounding violations. They also respond to all incidents, accidents and other emergency situations that may occur during their tour of duty. Officers work closely with community members and groups, other Emerson College departments that deal with public safety issues, Boston police and fire, emergency medical services, the court system, and the larger surrounding community. The successful candidate is a community service-oriented team player committed to working in partnership with all components of the Emerson College community to provide a safe campus environment.
Primary Duties, Responsibilites, and Tasks • Working in partnership with campus stakeholders, liaising with community groups and individuals;
•Participating in the delivery of crime prevention education to the community;
•Conducting patrol activity on foot, by car and bicycle;
•Responding to calls for assistance from the community;
•Identifying and/or apprehending crime suspects, making arrests as necessary;
•Diffusing potentially volatile situations with due regard for the safety of all involved;
• Conducting preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, taking statements in compliance with relevant statutory and constitutional legal requirements;
• Cooperating with other police agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses related to campus incidents;
• Attending and giving evidence in court and at other hearings;
• Entering and retrieving data from a variety of computer software programs;
• Completing administrative procedures such as preparing reports;
• Participating in campus safety and welfare programs such as RAD courses, threat assessment teams, sexual assault response teams, Resident Assistant and Resident Director training
• Assisting Director/Chief in establishing procedures by making recommendations regarding changes or improvements in Department operations, represent the Department at meetings as required;
• Completing both mandated (e.g. CPR, Defensive Tactics, etc.) and specialized (e.g. emergency management, investigative techniques, crime analysis, etc.) training assignments.Characteristics of Successful Candidates:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment) • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college
• Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license and the ability to be insured by the College’s automobile liability insurer
• Ability to be warranted as a Special State Police Officer by Massachusetts State Police
• Successful completion of various fitness for duty assessments; including a comprehensive background investigation, a psychological evaluation, and a medical examination.Physical Requirements:
• Physical demands are those in excess for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb stairs, balance, walk, and run; must be able to access all facilities, on foot, to respond to emergency calls for service to include the upper-most floors of campus buildings when elevators are not available; must be able to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings
• Must be physically able to operate and communicate using a variety of machines and equipment including baton, automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.
• Work includes considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as severe weather/ temperatures and loud noises
• Work environment involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety; must be physically fit and able to defend community members and one’s self from attack or physical assault
• Must be able to wear the required uniform
• Must be able to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts as required – overtime is required
Preferred/Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment) .
Required Prior Work Experience .
