Job Description

 

The Huntington Beach Police Department Cadet program introduces young men and women, ages 18 to 25, to the field of law enforcement. This is a part-time job in which the cadet must be enrolled as a full-time student in high school or college. Work hours are assigned around the student’s class schedule. The Cadet program is designed to develop the skills and abilities of young individuals who wish to one day pursue a career as a sworn Police Officer. Cadets are provided with the opportunity to work a variety of assignments throughout the Police Department, including, but not limited to, the Front Desk, Sub-stations, Training Unit and Communications. Successful candidates, after one-year of employment, are encouraged to apply for testing process to potentially promote to Police Recruit. Police Recruits are full-time, regular status employees (salary plus benefits package) and attend a local Police Academy.

Part-time employment does not qualify to receive City benefits,   except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security   system; however, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory   which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public   Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and   employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.

SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be reviewed for relevant qualifications.   Current school enrollment status MUST be attached with the job application.   Qualifying applicants will then participate in the selection process. Each   component of the selection process listed below must be passed in order to   continue.

    1. Written Exam – Pass/Fail
    1. Oral Board Interview – Weighted 100%
    1. Comprehensive Background Investigation,        fingerprinting and Polygraph Exam (Recent drug usage, theft or other        illegal activity may be cause for disqualification.
  1. A pre-placement drug screen and TB screen are        conducted upon a conditional offer of employment. Employment is        conditioned upon completion of a background check with the California        Department of Justice (DOJ) via the LiveScan fingerprinting process. A        candidate is required to complete the drug screen, TB screen and        fingerprint process with acceptable results before an employment start        date. Upon employment, employee is subject to further reporting from DOJ        via Subsequent Arrest Notification Service.

It   provides its officers opportunities to gain exposure in a wide variety of   municipal police activities (e.g., helicopter, K-9, DEA Task Force, Vice,   Narcotics, beach detail, and downtown foot beat). It is proud to have its own   Crime Lab, and was the first City in the nation to operate a fully   computerized Communications Command and Control Center.
