Job Description
The Correctional Officer I is an entry level unarmed security position receiving training to competently work one of three general post assignments; Booking, pod and floor to include visitation or Master Control. A Correctional Officer I relies heavily upon interpersonal communication skills and techniques and writing skills to prepare accurate, and sometimes extensive documentation, reports and court testimony. All post assignments perform activities necessary to maintain the health, safety, security and welfare of jail staff and incarcerated individuals (inmates). These activities include, but are not limited to, distribution of hygienic supplies, laundry, mail and facilitation of medical, dental, visitation, special programs or group activities and recreation. All assignments require rotating shifts since we maintain jail functions 24 hours daily, seven (7) days a week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: |
| To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Works effectively in groups of peers and other employees. Insures oral and written directives, policy, and ordinances of Weld County and the Sheriff are consistently and uniformly applied, on a daily basis, and that actual practices reflect these applications•Directly supervises inmate activities within podular housing areas, daily, to provide for health, safety, and security of inmates, employees, and the public. Provides indirect supervision to inmates and support to officers assigned in podular housing areas to maintain safety, security, and order within the Weld County Jail.
•Accurately inventories, distributes, and collects and inventories articles coming into and going out of podular housing areas, daily, to insure health, safety, and security of inmates, employees, and the public. Initiates action to correct distribution and collection inventory discrepancies. •Conducts face and head counts and reports results, daily, to maintain effective control of inmates; conducts strip, person, cell, and area searches, daily, to maintain effective control of inmates; consistently, and effectively enforces jail rules regulating inmate conduct through verbal counseling or accurate preparation of an infraction report to document a written warning, lockdown, or request a disciplinary board. This duty is performed daily to maintain effective control of inmates. •Observes inmates and maintains alertness, continuously, to detect, deter, or prevent self-destructive or criminal behaviors, including, but not limited to, suicide, escape, assault, theft, criminal mischief, extortion, ethnic intimidation, and introduction of contraband; escorts inmates, daily, from one location to another to provide for required inmate activities; observes inmates, continuously, to detect and refer medial conditions to professional medial personnel and facilitate medical treatment. •Identifies crisis counseling situations and makes referrals to professional counseling staff on a daily basis for inmate safety and security; accurately confirms identity of inmates from booking photographs and name rosters to facilitate distribution of meals, commissary orders, and authorize inmate entry and exit from podular housing areas. •Executes emergency response and tactical plans, when necessary, for events including, but not limited to, hostage, natural disaster, fire, riot, requests for assistance, and electrical power failure to maintain safety and security within the Weld County Jail; effectively apply physical control techniques and restraint devices according to procedure, whenever necessary to maintain inmate control and order. •Determine lawful authority to accept or release a prisoner from the jail to maintain safety, security, and order within the Weld County Jail; obtain legible photograph and classifiable ten-prints of prisoners accepted for booking, daily, to accurately identify inmates. •Facilitates and protects the Constitutional rights of all persons, daily, including, but not limited to, access to medical and dental care, law library, religious activities, legal representation, and due process. •Allows only authorized entry and exit of secure jail perimeter and areas within the jail facility, daily, to maintain safety and security of the Weld County Jail; documents inmate behavior and pod or floor activity, daily, in specific logbooks to maintain accurate records of inmate behavior and activity. •Works rotating shifts to meet deployment needs which vary at times; demonstrates job competency in at least one general post assignments with minimal direct supervision as documented on regular performance appraisals. •Provides basic intervention and applies conflict resolution strategies, daily, to effectively control inmate behaviors and maintain order within the Weld County Jail; collects and properly distributes mail, inmate complaint forms, inmate supplies and laundry, meals, and written in-house communication, daily, to comply with Constitutional mandates and to maintain order in the Weld County Jail; takes action to adjust an inmate complaint, obtain repair or maintenance to facility or equipment, daily, to maintain safe, and healthful environment of facility. •Properly accepts documents, packages, money, and safely stores inmate property, daily, to comply with Constitutional mandates and to maintain order in the Weld County Jail; provides accurate, timely information, daily, in response to inquiries from inmates and citizens related to bonding, visitation, property, commissary, and court appearances to maintain order with the Weld County Jail. •Facilitates smooth transition of shifts through briefings and oral communication, daily, to maintain order within the Weld County Jail; document unusual conditions or events, daily, in electronic and written form to be shared with other shifts and facility personnel to maintain safety, security, and order within the Weld County Jail. •Provides basic intervention and applies conflict resolution strategies, daily, to effectively control inmate behaviors and maintain order within the Weld County Jail •Collects and properly distributes mail, inmate complaint forms, inmate supplies and laundry, meals and written in-house communication, daily, to comply with Constitutional mandates and to maintain order in the Weld County Jail •Takes action to adjust an inmate complaint, obtain repair or maintenance to facility or equipment, daily, to maintain safe and healthful environment of facility •Properly accepts documents, packages, money and safely stores inmate property, daily, to comply with Constitutional mandates and to maintain order in the Weld County Jail •Provides accurate, timely information, daily, in response to inquires from inmates and citizens related to bonding, visitation, property, commissary and court appearances to maintain order within the Weld County Jail •Facilitates smooth transition of shifts through briefings and oral communication, daily, to maintain order within the Weld County Jail •Document unusual conditions or events, daily, in electronic and written form to be shared with other shifts and facility personnel to maintain safety, security and order within the Weld County Jail |

Other Necessary Requirements: |
| •All officers must possess the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the essential functions of this position. As a condition of continued employment, a Correctional Officer I, must with in six months of their date of hire, successfully complete the prescribed training program determined by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office•Knowledge of U.S. Constitution and Court interpretations pertaining to inmates and jail procedure, Colorado Revised Statutes Titles 16,17,and 18, Weld County Jail Inmate Rules and Regulations, Weld County Jail Inmate Handbook, Principles of Direct Supervision and directives related to Weld County Jail policy and procedure. •Knowledge of suicide prevention and intervention strategies with in a correctional facility •Knowledge of potential inmate medical conditions for referral to medical professionals •Knowledge of appropriate physical control techniques and restraint devises utilized within the Weld County Jail •Knowledge of basic intervention and conflict resolution•Skill to operate computer keyboard, portable two-way radio, electronic buttons and switches, video recording equipment and television monitors •Writing skill sufficient to accurately describe an observation or action to an independent third party without need of additional oral explanation •Skill to safely and effectively conduct inmate counts and searches •Skill to effectively apply physical control techniques and restraint devises •Skill to obtain legible photograph and classifiable ten-prints of prisoners •Skill to collect, inventory and distribute inmate articles •Skill to properly fit and use self-contained breathing apparatus under emergency conditions •Ability to effectively communicate with and persuade persons of differing backgrounds and behavior patterns in a wide range of settings Material, Equipment, Machines Directly Used: Physical Demands/Work Environment: A Correctional Officer I will be assigned to one of several posts throughout the jail. Inmates are supervised using direct supervision from posts within an inmate housing unit. Some inmate housing units may contain up to forty inmates. All posts, except master control, require walking on concrete floors. Officers may be required to observe facility activity from CCTV monitors for approximately 80 CCTV Cameras. Officers must have full mobility and use of both arms. They must be able to remove and place hand cuffs on prisoners. They must have the ability for full extension above their head to lift and remove supplies, inmate property, conduct pat searches. Officers must have a full range of motion to perform self defense techniques taught by the Sheriff’s Office that may include the use of hands, arms, legs and feet. They must be able to use a computer keyboard. Officers must assist in lifting prisoners under the influence of alcohol or drugs or uncooperative prisoners from floor level to a bed level. They are required to move quickly, climb stairs and ladders. They must be able to run to assist other officers when they call for help. Officers must have the ability and range of flexibility to reach over their heads and reach below their knees and to bend over or squat down. They must have the ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time. Must have the ability to lift 125 pounds. Dual hearing is required. Correctional Officers are required to listen to multiple audio inputs simultaneously such as portable radio conversations, conversations with inmates or other sources, noise within the housing units, alarms, etc. Single eye correctable vision is acceptable Officers must have the ability to speak English clearly within normal perimeters. Officers must converse with other officers, professional, prisoners and the public in person, telephone and two-way radio. |
