<td>PATROL DUTIES 20% IN/80% OUT: Patrols an assigned area to   establish a presence, reduce opportunities for crime, detect criminal   activity and render service to the public. Listens to the car radio to   receive messages and remains aware of surrounding activities on an assigned   shift. Investigates trouble spots in high crime areas and in an assigned   patrol area. Remains alert and observant in order to detect anything unusual   within the patrol area. Drives patrol car at a high rate of speed in response   to emergency or enforcement of situations according to departmental policy.   Patrols an assigned area in a patrol car and on foot. Confronts suspects or   suspicious persons and takes enforcement action as deemed appropriate.   Proceeds to crime scene, accidents, or incidents based on radio message   received. Reads maps or follows directions to get to an address or location   which requires assistance. Responsible for patrolling assigned area in a &#8220;community   policing&#8221; manner which consists of knowing assigned zone, its geography   and trouble spots and knowing the merchants and people. Conducts preliminary   investigations. Conducts interviews and interrogations. Locates and questions   wit-nesses and potential witnesses when investigating crimes. <p>CITIZEN INTERACTION 10% IN/90% OUT: Talks to citizens while on routine patrol   to answer their questions and to reflect interest in them and their   community. Responds to citizen requests for police service or assistance.   Deals with upset and angry people; attempts to calm them and explain procedures.   Interacts with persons who have drug problems or alcohol problems. Talks to   residents or merchants to establish a presence, identify problems and   encourage cooperation. Communicates clearly and politely. Talks with various   people in person or by telephone to receive complaints, answer questions or   provide information. Notifies parents or guardians of juveniles involved in   mischief or taken into custody.</p>
<p>TRAINING 50% IN/50% OUT: Practices firearms skills on firing range in order   to qualify with service weapon. Practices expandable baton skills in order to   qualify on an annual basis. Attends classes, workshops and conferences on   police procedures to update and improve skills. Reads court decisions and or   changes in statutes, ordinances and legislation to stay informed of changes.   Reads and interprets criminal law, operations orders, department policies and   procedures.</p>
<p>COURT PREPARATION AND TESTIMONY 100% IN: Meets with attorney to provide case   facts, discuss evidence, prepare for testimony. Gathers and organizes all   records, reports and information needed for court presentation. Testifies in   court regarding the facts of the case known first hand, evidence collected,   notes and action taken.</p>

<p>The job functions are performed on a rotating shift schedule. Officers are   assigned to a scheduled shift for a 16-week duration.</p>
<p>Equipment used consists of a patrol car, handcuffs, expandable baton, police   portable radio, mobile radio, pager, lights and sirens, spot light,   flashlight, service weapon, fire extinguisher, computer, printer, copier.</p>
<p>Immediate supervisor is at the job site 85% of the time, and is also   available by police radio and telephone.</td>

Applicants that currently hold a valid Texas Peace Officer license or who have received an honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces completing a minimum of twenty-four (24) months of active duty and are substituting prior experience for the academic requirement need only have graduated from high school or its equivalent or obtained a GED. Additional work experience (beyond the required minimum) of the type described may substitute for the academic requirements with fifteen (15) academic semester hours equivalent to six (6) months of work experience or any combination of approved relative work experience and academic achievement to meet minimum requirements may be substitutable.</p>
<p>Applicants must qualify on written/physical demands tests and are required to successfully complete polygraph examination, background investigation, board selection process, psychological testing, physical/vision examinations, drug screening.</p>

<div>Upon successful completion of the Academy, the salary for Police Officer is $5,853- $7,506 per month, plus very generous benefits and salary incentives.
</div>
<p><strong>Salary Incentives:<br />
</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Officers working designated shifts receive 2% shift differential.</li>
<li>Officers may receive $225.00/month bilingual pay, if qualified.</li>
<li>Retirement &#8211; PERS 2% at age 62 retirement benefit.</li>
<li>Officers receive up to $500.00 month for college degree/units and P.O.S.T. Certificates.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Detectives receive 7.5% additional pay per month.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Canine Handlers receive up to 6.5% additional pay per month.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Motors receive up to 6.5% additional pay per month.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Corporals in Patrol receive 10% additional pay per month.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Crime Scene Investigators receive $250 per month.</li>
<li>Officers assigned as Field Training Officers receive up to $275 per month.</li>
<li>Officers not in special assignments, with over 6 years service, receive 5% Senior Officer pay.<strong>Other Benefits: </strong>
<p>Orange Police Officers work the 4/10 schedule. Employees receive 100 hours per year of holiday accrual, and 80 hours of vacation for the first 4 years of service. Vacation accrual increases to 120 hours upon 5 years of service, and increases to a maximum of 220 hours after 30 years of service. The City also pays court standby pay. In addition to retirement, the City offers an optional Deferred Compensation Plan.</p>

<div>Employees must meet standards of physical stature, endurance, and agility established by the City. Tasks involve frequent driving, walking and standing, and occasional running; frequent light lifting and occasional lifting of heavy objects or persons; employee must have the physical ability to apprehend and restrain subjects and to defend oneself from attack. Tasks involve the operation of vehicles, firearms, and other equipment in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and productive operations. Tasks may require exposure to extreme heat or cold, extreme weather conditions, strong odors and/or smoke, dust, or pollen.
